Interpreting Financial Statements
September 8th 2022 7:30 am – 12:30 pm

At the Golden Tulip Hotel, Westlands

“…I used to only look at the profit and loss statement of my business, barely skimming the remaining pages. I think tonight I’m going to just lock myself up and do a whole lot of calculation, and really get the full breadth of insights…”

Last Thursday we had our second business financial management session: Understanding Financial Statements. We went through the basic ratios that we ought to calculate in financial statements and used the insights we’d gained, both financial and non-financial information, to draw conclusions in the real-life example we worked on.

“As an accountant, this really helps me take the perspective of management when I present financial statements…”

Attendees found the session useful for all, whether starting a business, running an existing business or seeking insights to invest in one. Accountants were able to see things from the perspective of business owners and investors, and we were able to understand the calculations accountants make and ask the right questions.

Next stop? Budgeting and Financial Planning this month, then Compliance in early October. Follow and subscribe to stay informed.

Understanding Financial Statements
July 28th 2022 8 am – 10 am

At the Royal Tulip Hotel, Kilimani

Preceded by a networking breakfast

Last month’s training was a good foundation to help you know what to expect from your accountant and to demystify financial statements. We took the time to understand Profit and Loss Accounts, the Balance Sheet and the Cash Flow Statement in a practical way.

“All in all, it was informative and illuminating! Please call us back for more!!”

Feedback is that the content was presented clearly and effectively – simple enough for non-finance professionals to grasp the principles. The venue was excellent and easy to access.

We covered three topics today – Understanding (1) The Balance Sheet (2) The Profit and Loss Account (3) The Cash Flow Statement. The attendees were able to do three exercises drawing these up from scratch, understanding why entries are made in different sets of statements and the importance of each statement. They all requested that we consider running more indepth sessions on each of these financial statements as the time allocated today was not enough to cover the depth and breadth of information they felt they would require to fully appreciate the subject.

We had three sets of participants representing family owned businesses – one a Father who brought his son who he hopes to take over the business when he retires. Their feedback was that it was a very useful training – much needed in the SME sector and should be cascaded widely
